Hey Folks,

Reader Paul asks about a ceiling system called Zip Up Ceilings, from the folks at IG Creative Solutions. I haven’t heard of this system in the past, but after looking over the website, it seems pretty cool! For those unfamiliar, the system involves PVC rails installed directly to your ceiling joists. Flat sheets of PVC with a rail on the backside are “zipped” into the rails, allowing for an easy install, and easy removal. This also makes a very clean looking ceiling, without the grid look that is so hard to avoid with most systems that allow ceiling plenum access. The system appears to be very easily cleanable, which would make it perfect for any food service applications.

The only downfall I can see with a system like this is the alignment of the rails during installation. It seems that they would need to be installed perfectly parallel for an correct installation. I do know that proper measurement is a requirement for any professionally installed ceiling system, but this system appears to be oriented towards the do-it-yourselfer. Perfectly parallel tracks could be a bit of a challenge for the end user.

I also wonder what happens once the system is installed, and thermal expansion or shrinkage occurs in the material. Even though PVC won’t have much of this, it seems like it wouldn’t take much to cause some rippling or waves in the ceiling.

I have not experienced this system personally, so if anyone has any experience with it, please drop us a comment! I’d love to hear about it!
