A while back, we sent a small group of people, including “The Sky’s the Limit” readers, to our new website for testing. We had to take down the site almost immediately due to many problems we found in that first test run (thanks folks).

We have finally completed the fixed site, and tested it. It is up and running very smoothly, thanks entirely to our crack web team. Here she is, in all her glory, the new Ceilume Ceiling Tile website:

Aside from our own Ceilume Smart Ceiling Tile, there is only one other nationally known DROP AWAY ceiling tile available for use underneath fire suppression sprinklers.

Thermo-Tile is made from molded Polystyrene, and comes in several sizes, and a few styles. It also comes in two thicknesses, one offering a higher insulation value than the other. All grid mounted Thermo-Tiles are tested and certified for use underneath fire suppression sprinklers, and are also Class A fire rated for flame spread and smoke developed.

What you lose in style with these, you make up for in R-value. With an R-value of 4.55 in the 1″ thick variety, Thermo-Tile has the best insulation value of the drop away tile market, by far.

They ship nationwide, and are also available throughout the nation in retail building material stores and lumber yards.

If you’re looking for an easy way to change the look of your house without major renovations, then a new coat of paint may be the solution for you! We’ve just discovered a wonderful paint company that has got some amazing colors and effects. Check out Modern Masters! They’ve got a couple of awesome looking paint styles.

Their Metallic Paint collection is a great mix of real metallic looking stuff. They offer a wide range of very realistic colors, including some with a pearlescent finish!

Their Metal Effects line takes a leap forward from there, offering metal based paints with an activator that ages the finish to look exactly like rusted or aged metal! Very cool.

Their coolest line, however, is the Wildfire paint selection, shown in the picture above at the 2002 Olympics opening ceremony. This is a batch of paint colors with additives that glow under a black light. These paints have been used on several rides at Disneyland and DisneyWorld, and are also used in the Las Vegas based show “The Blue Man Group”.

Modern Masters also offers several other lines of paints, for everything from floor to ceiling. Check ‘em out, and don’t forget your masking tape!

iPhotoMEASURE is a program that allows you to generate fairly accurate measurements for a space based only on a digital photo of that space. You only need one or two reference measurements in the picture (you could even place a piece of paper, or a ruler in the picture) for it to work.

This software allows a contractor to provide quotes on simple jobs without a trip to the job site! Home owners, you can get a materials list and purchase what you need for your project without those annoying trips up and down the ladder in the living room. This ALSO allows you to get decent measurements in areas that might not be very safe to get at with a tape measure. Imagine a scientist getting measurements of a lava flow in a completely inaccessible area of a volcano!

I’d try to explain the functionality of this program in detail, but the website does a pretty good job, so check ‘em out yourself!

The program is not quite perfect, however, so if you need exact measurements, the old school process is still the best.

I just discovered a website offering high density polyurethane wood-look beams and ceiling covers. These folks have managed to get this stuff to really look like wood!

The company sells direct from the web, and also offers real wood beams and other wood products. Their ceiling covers are impressive, and available in several styles and finishes. Check out their close ups for an idea of just how realistic this stuff appears!

I’m fresh back from the AWCI INTEX show in Las Vegas, where professionals, product reps and manufacturers gather to gamble and drink booze, err, I mean make new connections and find leads on new products and methods. The show went well, with the Ceilume Crew (myself and Ed) manning the booth for two days, and a total of about 9 hours.

Connections were made, products presented, and pretzels consumed. Over all, it was a good show, except that the show floor was split between two convention halls that were seperated by a 15 minute walk through Casinos, restaurants and specialty shops. In an effort to help out our brethren of the second, more elusive exhibit hall, here are a few interesting companies and manufacturers we ran into:

Poraver – Manufacturers of glass bead additive used to lighten heavy masonry and gypsum work, along with many other applications. Glass bead is a great way to recycle otherwise unusable glass waste and cut down on virgin material use.

Owens Corning – Makers of our ever favorite Rigid Foam Insulation, which allows you to add insulation above lightweight ceiling tiles without resting added weight on the tiles themselves.

Sound Seal – Makers of fine acoustical wood ceiling tiles.

Panolam Industries – Offers a wide variety of surfacing solutions to fit just about any need you can come up with. Their range of products includes Fiberglass Reinforced Laminate and Plastics, Thermally Fused Malamine (TFM) panels, and High Pressure Laminates (HPL).

They even offer a variety of drop out tile to compete with Ceilume’s drop away tile for use under fire sprinklers. They are an official Thermo-tile distributor, and one of very few!! These tiles are certified for use under fire suppression sprinklers, and will fall away from the grid in the event of a fire, allowing the hidden sprinklers above to activate and put the fire out. Pretty cool!
